Workers at an Auburn-based medical marijuana dispensary are reportedly forming a union in the wake of numerous violations found at the operation during a state investigation.
The Kennebec Journal reported that employees of the Wellness Connection of Maine have begun forming a union among its 41 employees. The company's management won't say whether it will recognize the new entity if the employees are successful.
Barbara Heap, an employee at the company's Auburn growing operation, told the paper that a majority of workers have joined the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which includes workers mostly from the meat and food-packing industry.
The Sun Journal reported workers had contacted that paper for weeks to detail, on the condition of anonymity, what they called unsanitary conditions that prompted an employee walk-out in February.
A union representative told the Kennebec Journal that management has denied giving voluntary recognition to the new union, but company officials told the paper union negotiations are ongoing and they are open to more meetings.
