Portland rock gym plans expansion with N.H. firm

A New Hampshire-based rock gym company has plans for a 13,000-square-foot climbing gym in Portland that would absorb the staff and membership of the Maine Rock Gym on Marginal Way.

The Bangor Daily News reported the 19-year-old Maine Rock Gym and the New Hampshire-based company Evolution are seeking city approval to build on a portion of a parking lot at 65 Warren Ave. A gym there would be Evolution’s second location, after its flagship facility in Concord, N.H.

The plans for a new facility more than quadruple the square footage of the existing Maine Rock Gym, which has 2,800 square feet and 24-foot-climbing walls. Scott Howard, owner of the Maine Rock Gym, told the paper the new gym would have 42-foot climbing walls.

The companies are expected to go before the city’s planning board tonight.
