Maine Military Authority to lay off up to 140

The Maine Military Authority, which repairs and rebuilds military vehicles for the National Guard in Limestone and Augusta, will lay off up to 140 of its 210 workers.

Peter Rogers, a communications director for the Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management, told the Bangor Daily News the layoffs are largely a result of troop and equipment reductions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Most of the cuts are expected in the company’s Limestone office, though some cuts may be made in Augusta as well, Rogers said. The Maine Department of Labor’s Rapid Response team plans to help the laid-off employees apply for unemployment benefits and find other job opportunities.

Bob Jandreau, operations manager for the company, told the paper the cuts are “pretty devastating” and that the company will likely refocus its work toward refurbishing transit buses as well as fire trucks, municipal vehicles, school buses and expanding into work on international military equipment.

Politicians at the state and national levels issued statements of support and promises to help the company and those workers following news of the layoffs.
