Vermont claims authority over pipeline changes
Vermont regulators ruled this week that reversing the flow of an oil pipeline running from Montreal to South Portland would require a state permit that could take years to acquire.
The Associated Press reported the Portland-Montreal Pipeline Corp. asked the state’s District 7 environmental coordinator to reconsider a ruling issued earlier this year requiring a land-use permit should the company seek to reverse the flow of the pipeline to transport tar sands oil from western Canada for export.
Pipeline spokesman Jim Merrill told the AP that the company is still reviewing the ruling.
Pipeline officials have said they have no plans to reverse the flow of the line but were active in making the case at public meetings across the region that tar sands oil does not pose an increased environmental threat. Opponents say reversing the flow would increase the likelihood of a spill.
