Three large retail stores in South Portland are packing their bags for a new development in Scarborough that currently hosts Wal-Mart and Lowe’s home improvement center.
The Forecaster reported that Marshall’s, HomeGoods and Bob’s Discount Furniture will move from their current location at The Shops at Clarks Pond in South Portland to Gallery Place in Scarborough, a new 114,000 square-foot retail development. Charles Day, an agent with CBRE/The Boulos Co. who helped broker the deal, confirmed the move to the newspaper.
Day told The Forecaster that the stores are moving because the Scarborough developer is “nice, newer and access is a little better” than the Clark’s Pond development located off Gorham Road, which includes Home Depot and a Cinemagic movie theater. The Gallery Place development is located between Payne and Mussey roads.
“Retailers prefer more of a setting like this, so people can get in and out," he told the newspaper. "You can sit at that [Gorham Road traffic] light at Bass Shoe Outlet forever."
A site plan for Gallery Place will go in front of the Scarborough Planning Board on May 12, though it’s not clear when the three stores would officially move.
