A new study shows that Bangor’s waterfront concert series last year generated $17.5 million for the local economy and attracted more tourists than ever before.
The study by University of Maine economist Todd Gabe is a followup to a previous one that found the concert series had an economic impact of more than $30 million for its first three years from 2010-2012, the Bangor Daily News reported. Local businesses told the newspaper they have indeed felt the impact of the concerts.
Gabe’s new study found that as attendance has increased at the concerts, so has the number of attendees from out of state. The 19 waterfront concerts in 2013 drew 20.5% of their attendees outside of Maine, a large increase over the 2.5% figure in 2010. Since the waterfront concerts began in 2010, they have drawn more than 300,000 people, the study said.
