Burt’s Bees co-founder Burt Shavitz, who claimed last year that he was ousted by co-founder Roxanne Quimby, has died at the age of 80.
The company announced on its Facebook page that Shavitz died on Sunday, but did not state his cause of death. Shavitz, who co-founded the company with Quimby in Dover-Foxcroft in 1984, is the namesake for the company and its line of cosmetic and personal products. The company is now based in Durham, N.C., and is owned by Clorox Co.
“It is with broken hearts that we must convey the saddest news: Burt Shavitz, our co-founder and namesake, has left for greener fields and wilder woods,” Burt’s Bees said in a Facebook post. “We remember him as a bearded, free-spirited Maine man, a beekeeper, a wisecracker, a lover of golden retrievers and his land. Above all, he taught us to never lose sight of our relationship with nature. Now it’s up to us, the brand he helped build — and you, his fans and advocates — to sustain his spirit and ideals. Thanks for everything, Burt. We’ll miss you.”
In a documentary released last year, “Burt’s Buzz,” Shavitz said that Quimby kicked him out of the company after having an affair with an employee, which ended with a settlement that gave him 37 acres of Maine land and an undisclosed amount of money.
