FairPoint gets $13M to expand rural broadband
FairPoint Communications said Tuesday that it has received $13.3 million in annual federal funding to expand broadband access for rural areas in Maine.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based telecom company said it received the money from the Federal Communication Commission’s Phase II of its Connect America Fund for Maine. As a result, the telecom company said it has committed to constructing and operating new infrastructure to offer broadband service in approximately 35,500 underserved locations in Maine. The minimum download and upload speeds will be 10 Mbps and 1 Mbps, respectively.
"FairPoint enthusiastically supports the positive intent of CAF Phase II to bring broadband to underserved areas of Maine, and we are excited to participate in this FCC-administered program," said CEO Paul H. Sunu. "We are committing tens of millions of dollars in capital to build and upgrade infrastructure in Maine to extend affordable broadband services to remote areas which will help Maine businesses and residents alike stay connected to the world."
