USM digitizing library's globe collection with $500,000 grant
The University of Southern Maine’s Osher Map Library is undertaking a multi-year project to digitize 24 of its nearly 300 globes, some of which have been hidden from public view for hundreds of years.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the library’s 294-globe collection is the second-largest public collection of globes in the United States, second only to the Library of Congress’ collection. Eventually, the map library in Portland would like to digitize its entire collection.
The project to digitize 24 of the globes is being funded with a $500,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, according to the Press Herald. Currently, three globes are available on library’s website.
The collection’s oldest globe is a 1603 celestial globe by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, according to the Press Herald.
