Bangor officials move forward with possession of downtown building

Despite efforts from the former owner of the historic 30,000-square-foot Central Building in downtown Bangor, the city council has voted to take possession of the building due to unpaid taxes.

The Bangor Daily News reports that there are six liens against the building totaling approximately $35,000.

“I don’t have a ton of sympathy for $35,000 in unpaid taxes,” City Councilor Ben Sprague said during the council meeting on Monday.

Additionally, the BDN reports that the building's owner, David S. Boyd of California, owes roughly $33,600 in real estate taxes and slightly less than $1,000 in downtown development taxes. An additional $300 is also owed in unpaid sewer charges.

The BDN reports Boyd said that he has already invested $400,000 in the building, which hasn’t been in regular use since 2007. The newspaper noted that $310,000 of that investment was for purchasing the building, while the majority of the remaining money was tax payments.

Boyd also told city officials that he has drawn up a lease for a prospective occupant of the building’s first floor and was willing to pay the $250,000 needed for renovations, but to no avail as the city council voted 8-0 in favor of taking possession of the building.
