Downeaster rail project expands Boston service

A $9.3 million project that will allow the Downeaster to run five round trips daily between Brunswick and Boston is expected to begin next year.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the Royal Junction Siding project will add a second, four-mile track parallel to an existing rail that runs through Falmouth and Cumberland.

Currently, the commuter rail service does offer five daily round trips between Portland and Boston. However, the presence of a single track between Brunswick and Portland that is shared between passenger and freight trains only permits two trips from Boston to Freeport and Brunswick, the Press Herald reported.
