Fiberight LLC’s $69 million, 144,000-square-foot waste-to-energy plant in Hampden will move forward this week with the arrival of the steel framework.
Maine Public reported that roadwork and other site preparation targets were completed ahead of schedule.
“So a lot of the work is ahead of schedule. So that certainly increases the chances of the building being up by Christmas time,” Fiberight CEO Craig Stuart-Paul told members of the Maine Resource Recovery Association in Brewer.
The plant is expected to be operational by April 2018.
More than 115 communities have signed contracts to send their refuse to Fiberight when their existing contracts with the Penobscot Energy Recovery Co. expire next year.
In July, the Bangor Daily News reported the plant is expected to convert organic materials into biofuels. Glass, metals, papers and plastics will be removed and sold. Plans call for using fibrous material left over from the conversion process to make heating fuel pellets. In April, the Finance Authority of Maine approved $45 million in tax-free debt financing for the plant. Orrington-based Penobscot Energy Recovery Co. also runs a waste-to-energy plant, but contracts end in April 2018.
