Seacoast Shipyard Association, whose stated mission is “to protect the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from closure,” reported Wednesday that the Kittery shipyard’s total economic impact in 2017 was $751.8 million.

That includes a total payroll for 6,450 employees of $525.2 million. Here’s the breakdown for the payroll by state:

  • Maine, 3,679 employees, $299.5 million
  • New Hampshire, 2,333 employees, $190 million
  • Massachusetts, 179 employees, $14.6 million
  • Other states, 259 employees, $21.1 million.

The military payroll for the shipyard in 2017 was $43.3 million: $27.1 million, Navy; $16.2 million, Coast Guard.

Purchased goods and services totaled $104.8 million and contracted facility services totaled $78.6 million.

Seacoast Shipyard Association’s annual report shows the shipyard’s 6,450 employment level in 2017 continued an upward trend since 2014, with the previous three years being 5,585 employees in 2014, 6,099 employees in 2015 and 6,329 employees in 2016. The civilian payroll tracked similar increases: $432.3 million in 2014; $482 million in 2015; $496.2 million in 2016 and $525.2 million in 2017.

John Joyal, chairman of the Seacoast Shipyard Association, told the Portsmouth Herald that the association will be reaching out to local high schools and vocational schools to highlight career options at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for students after they graduate.

“We are here to assure not only the shipyard remains viable, but the communities around the shipyard that support the shipyard also (remain viable),” he said. “The Seacoast Shipyard Association is starting to look at what we can do to start to refill the feeder tubes for that shipyard, because without the qualified people, without the skill-set of these students, the shipyard’s future looks bleak.”
