Machias Valley Airport awarded $2.5M for runway repairs

The Machias Valley Airport, which is owned and operated by the town of Machias, has been awarded $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to reconstruct its runway.
The Machias Valley Airport, which is owned and operated by the town of Machias, has been awarded $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to reconstruct its runway.
The grant funding was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration, an agency within the Transportation Department.
The airport is a public use facility — meaning it does not require permission to take off or land there — has has one 2,900-by-60-foot runway that can only accommodate single-engine aircraft. There is no designated helipad or approach-departure routes for helicopters, according to the airport’s website.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, announced the award this morning.
“The Machias Valley Airport is a vital piece of Washington County’s infrastructure that promotes economic and industrial development throughout the surrounding communities,” she said in a news release. “This investment will allow the town to make much needed improvements to the airport’s runway, ensuring safety and efficiency.”
