Class-action lawsuit filed against CMP over alleged overbillings

Central Maine Power faces a class-action lawsuit from customers alleging they’ve been overcharged in their monthly bills from the utility over the past winter.

The Associated Press reported that the lawsuit was filed Thursday in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Bangor Daily News reported on Wednesday that the Augusta law firm Lipman & Katz was joined by two other law firms — Trafton, Matzen, Belleau & Frenette of Auburn and Napoli Shkolnik of New York City — in bringing the lawsuit against CMP.

“As a result of our investigation, it is estimated that over 97,000 customers of Central Maine Power Co. have been overcharged 50% or more on their utility bills, and another 200,000 customers have been overcharged up to 50%,” attorney Sumner Lipman wrote in an announcement reported by the BDN.

Lipman told the BDN the law firms have been contacted by more than 200 people wanting to be included in the class-action lawsuit to recoup the alleged overbilling by CMP.

CMP spokesperson Gail Rice told the Associated Press that under state law the Maine Public Utilities Commission is tasked with ensuring fair, accurate bills and has not yet issued its findings in its investigation launched on Feb. 22 regarding the alleged overbillings.
