Maine's 'designing women' chip away at architecture's glass ceiling

Architecture remains a male-dominated field, but here in Maine, women are breaking through the glass ceiling as leaders and talented up-and-coming architects. Among the pioneers is SMRT Architects and Engineers in Portland, Maine's only large architectural firm led by a woman. which has been led by Ellen Belknap since 2004.

Maine is experiencing a real New England winter, which has caused many towns and cities across the state, including Bangor, Waterville, Auburn, Old Orchard Beach, Portland, Biddeford, and Saco, to issue parking bans.

For neighborhood businesses, parking bans become quite a headache. Some restaurants and small businesses have said parking bans discourage business and drive away customers.
