Two new Portland restaurants are in the running for Bon Appetit's 'best'
Foodie magazine Bon Appetit has named two Portland eateries among its 50 nominees for “America’s best new restaurants.”
Drifters Wife, at 59 Washington Ave., and Rose Foods, at 428 Forest Ave., made the list, which the magazine will narrow down to a “hot 10” on Aug. 14, according to its website.
Opened in 2016 by Peter and Orenda Hale, Drifters Wife offers a seasonal menu and a collection of organically produced wines from the couple’s adjoining wine shop, Maine & Loire. Rose Foods is a New York-style delicatessen launched last year by Chad Conley, who co-owns the Palace Diner in Biddeford. The deli also provides catering and does a wholesale business.
Both Drifters Wife and Rose Foods have already earned rave reviews from local and national press, including previous mentions by Bon Appetit.
The Portland restaurants are in good company.
Only two other New England dining spots, both in Cambridge, Mass., made the top 50. And only a handful of other cities are home to more than one nominee. New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C., were tied for the most nominees, each boasting three.
All nominees were chosen by Bon Appetit Editor at Large Andrew Knowlton, who described them as “eclectic, inspiring and very delicious.”
