A large mill building in Mechanic Falls that housed several businesses was destroyed in a fire Sunday that continues to smolder Monday morning.
The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that the mill building on Lewiston Street is owned by Charles Starbird and served as a used parts warehouse for Maine Cycle as well as a location for Corcoran Environmental Services, which recycles plastic.
The newspaper reported that witnesses said the fire apparently started in the Maine Cycle warehouse, which had moved to the Lewiston Street location in 2015 from its former warehouse in Auburn.
Firefighters from 19 departments — including Oxford, Norway, Paris, Casco, Poland, New Gloucester, Auburn, Bowdoin, Bath and Lisbon — assisted in battling the blaze or serving as backup at area fire stations, the newspaper reported.
WMTW Channel 8 TV reported that a Good Samaritan, Rob Vivenzio of Mount Vernon, helped save a man who was inside his apartment during the blaze by throwing a large cinder block through a window and then helping the man escape.
This morning the town of Mechanic Falls reported on its Facebook page that as of 7 a.m. all main roads in town are open as fire crews from eight towns continue to work with excavators opening up hotspots to put out remnants of the blaze at the former Marcal Paper Mill.
Cause of the fire, which was reported early Sunday afternoon, was not known, the Sun Journal reported.
The American Red Cross was helping those displaced by the fire, the newspaper reported.
Fire officials said there were no reports of any injuries, according to the Associated Press, which added that Town Manager Zakk Maher expected cleanup of the fire will take several days.
Marcal, a Soundview Paper Co. based in Elmwood Park, N.J., closed its Mechanic Falls mill in the fall of 1981. It’s a leading manufacturer of recycled tissues manufactured without chlorine bleaching, fragrances or dyes, according to the company’s website.
