Franklin Memorial Hospital, in Farmington, has completed its eight-month $2.7 million project to expand its facility to house a new magnetic resonance imaging scanner.
According to a news release, the installation of the scanner included stringent commissioning, including calibration with the manufacturer and subsequent performance monitoring. The new technology is now being used with patients.
“This is an important hospital investment toward better serving our patients,” Radiology, Cardiology and Pulmonary Services Director Kim Turner said in the release. “The scanner’s state-of-the-art platform makes it one of the most versatile and powerful systems available to date with feet-first, whole body coverage.”
The new scanner features advanced wide-bore technology to improve patient experience by operating with less noise, decreasing feelings of claustrophobia and accommodating heavier patients up to 500 pounds.
Patients can choose a nature video to view, lighting and music during the procedure to create a soothing environment.
MRI is a noninvasive medical test that utilizes magnetic fields to produce anatomical images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.
Franklin Memorial announced in April 2018 that it was replacing its MRI and constructing a building, connected to the hospital, to house it. The construction project was approximately $2.7 million, according to a news release at that time.
The magnet of the new technology — with 18 miles of wiring within it and weighing six tons — arrived in October.
In November 2018, Franklin Memorial Hospital was one of seven Maine hospitals to receive a “B” in the Leapfrog Group's fall 2018 Hospital Safety Grades. Overall, Leapfrog Group ranked Maine as the 10th safest state for hospital safety.
In 2017, Franklin Memorial earned a gold seal of approval from The Joint Commission, an independent, nonprofit organization that accredits and certifies more than 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. The Farmington-based hospital's three-year accreditation signifies that it provides safe and effective patient care and is demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards.
Franklin Memorial is a member of MaineHealth, a not-for-profit integrated health system that’s the largest health system in northern New England.
