Health insurance marketplace launches, with glitches

A federal online health insurance exchange opened Tuesday, with some glitches for Mainers trying to assess their options for coverage under the federal health care reform law.

The Associated Press reported that while some reported having trouble with logging into Maine’s federally run insurance exchange at healthcare.gov, proponents of the reform are taking the long view toward a six-month-long open enrollment period.

State officials estimate that up to 250,000 residents, including 130,000 who are uninsured, could buy insurance plans on the new exchange, which has a variety of plans from two companies, the nonprofit Maine Community Health Options and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Efforts to enroll people in the new insurance programs will be led in large part by a team of more than 125 “navigators” assigned to Maine who will help people buy health insurance through the exchanges during the Oct. 1-March 31 enrollment period.
