Portland releases building permit wait data

The average time spent waiting for various commercial building permits in Portland ranges from 43 to 70 days, data some developers say indicates a slow and onerous permitting process.

The Portland Press Herald reported the permit data released earlier this month is the first since the city began tracking it earlier this year.

Drew Sigfridson, president of the Maine Real Estate and Development Association, told the paper that Portland is "notorious" for having a slow permitting process and Jeff Levine, director of the city's Planning and Urban Development Department, said the data show "there is still a lot of work to be done."

The data showed an average wait of 43 days for a permit to alter a commercial structure, 70 days for a permit to add on to a business and 55 days to amend a commercial building permit.

For homeowners, the data showed the average wait for a permit to alter a home at 29 days and the average wait for an addition to a home at 67 days.
