The Maine Department of Transportation and the Maine Turnpike Authority have unveiled plans to spend $100 million over the next two years to replace three bridges in the Portland area.
In an announcement made yesterday, the DOT said it will spend more than $60 million to replace the Veterans Memorial Bridge that connects Portland and South Portland, with construction slated to start this summer, according to the Portland Press Herald. The project will be paid for with federal highway money, and the new bridge will open in July 2012. Reed & Reed Inc. of Woolwich won the bid to build the new bridge, and up to 1,700 jobs could be created with the project.
The DOT also plans in 2012 to replace the Martin's Point Bridge between Portland and Falmouth for $30 million, with money from federal sources expected to pay for about 80% of the project's costs. The Maine Turnpike Authority also said it will spend $7.5 million this summer to widen and rehabilitate the bridge that spans the Presumpscot River between Falmouth and Portland, near turnpike mile 52.
DOT and turnpike officials are planning to develop plans to reduce the impact of the work on drivers, according to the paper.
