Mercy Hospital announced at a donor reception Wednesday that it had reached more than half of the $20 million capital campaign goal launched in April 2017, when the quiet phase of fundraising began to implement the strategic plan to consolidate operations and services on an expanded Fore River campus.
Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1918 to care for those affected by the Spanish flu, as well as for the city’s poor and disadvantaged residents, the hospital moved to State Street in 1943. It established its second hospital campus along the Fore River in 2008, and it became in 2013 a part of the statewide health care system formerly known as EMHS, which rebranded under the new name of Northern Light Health this fall.
As a member of the Northern Light Health network, Mercy Hospital filed a letter of intent with the state of Maine at the end of last year to consolidate hospital operations on its Fore River campus. It will file a certificate of need by the end of this year, which marks the final step in the state regulatory process.
Chris Howard, chairman of Mercy Hospital’s board, told donors at Wednesday’s reception that in the past 18 months the hospital received more than $10 million from local businesses, individuals, foundations and Mercy Hospital employees and providers.
“We are grateful to each and every donor for their generous support and investment in Mercy’s next century of care,” said Charlie Therrien, president of Mercy Hospital. “Their strong commitment is a testament to the important role Mercy and our remarkable caregivers play in our community.”
Mercy Hospital is a member of Northern Light Health. It provides a broad range of medical and surgical services through eight primary care locations, five urgent care locations and sub-specialty physician practices. Mercy Hospital also includes Gary’s House and McAuley Residence.
