The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery is one step closer to getting nearly $12 million from Congress to consolidate and modernize its submarine overhaul operations.
The U.S. House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday approved the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes $11.9 million for facility upgrades to streamline welding, shear fitting and sheet metal operations and enhance efficiency at the shipyard, according to Seacoast Online. The bill will move to the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Sen. Susan Collins has asked for the act to include $17.4 million for the facility upgrades. If the House and Senate committees approve separate bills, a conference committee comprised of members of both the House and Senate panels would hammer out a final authorization bill, which would need approval from the full House and Senate.
The shipyard employs more than 5,000 people and performs scheduled maintenance and overhauls of the Navy's fleet of Los Angeles Class and Virginia Class nuclear submarines.
