The Legislature’s oversight agency found supervisors for the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were directed to shred documents justifying the awards totaling $4.7 million for regional health programs.
The Portland Press Herald reported the Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability found evidence that documents related to those awards were shredded and that there also were indications that the selection of grant recipients was improperly manipulated.
The agency’s investigation was sped up earlier this year when a whistleblower in the CDC filed a complaint with the Maine Human Rights Commission that her supervisor told her to shred documents related to the competitive awards to health-outreach nonprofits.
The paper reported that the Attorney General’s Office is also investigating that claim and may investigate further if directed to do so by the Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee.
The paper reported the OPEGA investigation found multiple employees said supervisors in the CDC ordered shredding of documents.
