2014 shrimping season may be cancelled

Regional regulators issued a report last week saying they will recommend a complete moratorium on shrimp fishing in the Gulf of Maine in 2014.

The Daily News of Newburyport reported that the recommendation from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission stands to shut down the entire fishing season next year if accepted by the Northern Shrimp Section during a meeting next week in Portland.

The regulators’ recommendation comes as the data shows the region’s shrimp stock is at its lowest levels since the commission began keeping records.

The paper reported that the commission’s Northern Shrimp Section can modify its fishing schedule and restrictions at any point during a season, but that it would be unlikely for the fishery to open after a moratorium is accepted.

The group will meet Dec. 3 at Portland’s Holiday Inn by the Bay to make a recommendation.
