Portland neighborhood seeks development, but no hotels

The historic India Street neighborhood in Portland seeks clustered retail development, sustainable growth and a push for more affordable housing, but it would like to avoid hotels.

These are some of the recommendations from the India Street Neighborhood Sustainable Development Plan, a report that seeks to encourage development in certain areas while also preserving the historic character of the neighborhood, The Forecaster reported.

The recommendations include new zoning and building code regulations that aim to leverage the neighborhood’s historic character to provide direction for future development, with affordable housing as one of the main focuses. The proposed changes will ultimately have to be vetted by the Portland City Council and Planning Board.
