A new federal program will award $2.6 million in grants to develop ideas, products and markets that increase demand for wood from Maine and other Northeastern states.
The Future Forest Economy Initiative — a collaboration of the U.S. Economic Development Administration, U.S. Endowment for Forestry & Communities and the Northern Forest Center — is looking for proposals to “expand innovation, create market demand and create conditions that will allow businesses and communities to benefit from these innovations,” according to a news release.
The deadline for concepts to be considered in the first round of funding is Dec. 2.
To be eligible for funding, projects must impact areas within the service region of the Northern Border Regional Commission, which includes the Maine counties of Androscoggin, Aroostook, Franklin, Hancock, Kennebec, Knox, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, Waldo and Washington. Projects must have clear and direct benefit for the wood products sector.
Although private companies cannot receive direct financing through the initiative, eligible applicants include nonprofits and public and private institutions of higher education.
The initiative will announce subsequent deadlines at a later date. The entire $2.6 million in available funds will be awarded by the end of 2021.
