A task force charged with guiding the future of the Cumberland County Civic Center unanimously voted last week to recommend a nearly $30 million renovation for the existing arena.
The decision comes at the recommendation of a report the task force received in August from consultants The Goldwater Group and Brailsford and Dunlavey, which recommended the $27 million-$29 million renovation as a middle ground of the three renovation options considered, according to the Portland Press Herald. The renovation recommendation includes adding private seating and club seats, revamping concession offerings and upgrading backstage facilities. A renovation that would have included mostly backstage work would have cost $3 million less, and a more extensive renovation, which would have added more seats to the 6,700-seat arena, would have cost about $5 million more, according to the paper. The task force anticipates that most of the work would be funded by a county bond, which voters would have to approve next November.
The proposal now must be approved by the civic center's board before more comprehensive cost estimates and a financing plan are finalized. The board will likely address the matter later this month or in November.
