Significant professional accomplishment: I am extremely fortunate that I have been able to spend the past year building a company that has great personal meaning and impact.
I feel that every professional challenge that I’ve overcome and every hurdle I’ve had to navigate around has led me to the amazing team that has gathered around me to build Chargely.
Current state of mind: I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and for the support of the communities I am a part of. I am also motivated to make them proud by what I will accomplish and what I give back to them.
Passion project: I take pride in taking the steps to bring clean electrification into my home and life as well as convincing others around me to do the same.
Recently we’ve installed solar, batteries, heat pumps, traded in our two internal combustion engine vehicles for electric vehicles, and use an electric lawnmower and snow blower. I’ve also convinced two people to go solar and six people to purchase EVs.
‘Lightbulb’ moment: Four years ago, I was working with an executive coach to help me find meaning and purpose in my work. She helped me realize that my passion was working at the intersection of technology, hard business problems, and the clean energy transition. Ever since then, I have focused on work that aligns with that purpose.
Audacious goal: To become as positively impactful as Chuck Feeney, the Alfond family and David and Barbara Roux in the field of philanthropy.
Favorite quote: “I believe that life exists to be enjoyed and that the most important thing is to feel good about yourself. ... Let’s assume we agree on this. It still leaves the question, ‘What can I do with my time to enjoy life and feel good about myself?’ I can’t offer a single answer that will fit all people. But based on the dozens of people I’ve interviewed, there are two components that are fundamental: Continual learning and service” — Tim Ferriss
Influential book: “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success,” by Carol S. Dweck
Favorite podcast: “How I Built This,” with Guy Raz
Favorite movie: “Contact,” directed by Robert Zemeckis
Favorite TV show: “How I Met Your Mother”
Best way to recharge: Spending time with my family outdoors. We are very much a skiing, biking and hiking family.
At age 60: Successfully giving back to my communities through philanthropy and service.
