$5M grant to fund Rumford bridge replacement

The U.S. Department of Transportation will award a $5.2 million grant to the state to help replace the 57-year-old Martin Memorial Bridge in Rumford.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, who is the senior Republican on the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, announced the grant in a press release. The Federal Highway Administration has classified the deteriorating bridge, which crosses the Androscoggin River on Route 2, as structurally deficient; Maine state officials have identified it as their top priority for replacement. Collins toured the bridge last month.

"Employers in the area, like NewPage, have told me that this bridge is critical to efficient and cost-effective transportation," said Collins in the release.

Correction: An earlier version of this story erroneously said the grant was being awarded to the town of Rumford.
