$60M pipeline project planned for Portland

A $60 million project to upgrade or replace more than 100 miles of natural gas pipeline in greater Portland is slated to begin next month.

Unitil, the New Hampshire-based natural gas supplier, plans to begin work in early April in the city's Old Port and move onto the Washington Avenue area this summer, according to the Portland Press Herald. The 14-year project is one of the largest of its kind ever done in the Northeast, the company told the paper. The work will help Unitil expand natural gas service to new commercial customers and meet growing demand for the fuel. The Maine Public Utilities Commission approved the project last year, but still must decide how much of the project's cost will be passed onto ratepayers. New England Utility Constructors will perform the work and use about 30 to 40 workers.

Unitil Corp. in late 2008 bought Northern Utilities Inc. and Granite State Gas Transmission Inc., which served 53,000 customers in Maine and New Hampshire, for $160 million, plus $41.6 million for working capital.
