Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick unveiled on Tuesday a $6.2 million plan to redevelop its Parkview Medical Center campus.

The announcement comes one year after the integration of Brunswick’s two health care institutions, which became possible when a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge in Portland approved a plan allowing Mid Coast Health Services to purchase the assets of Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick for approximately $7.87 million.

Renovations are scheduled to begin this fall, with the project expected to be completed in early 2018.

During the past year, Mid Coast-Parkview Health focused on facilitating a smooth transition for patients and employees, assessing community needs and identifying solutions and strategies to provide the best possible health care for the Midcoast region communities served by the Brunswick hospital.

Expanding care programs

Renovation of the former Parkview hospital includes expansion of primary care, cancer care, outpatient clinical services and community health and wellness programs. In addition to a new seven-provider primary care practice, the renovation calls for a 9,000-square-foot wellness center that will serve as a hub for community health and wellness programs such as cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, diabetes and cancer medical exercise, weight loss and lifestyle classes, stress reduction, as well as chronic disease prevention and management. The facility will have a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen and space for education, resources and counseling.

The wellness center will be joined by an expanded medical oncology practice, fully integrated and aligned with MaineHealth/Maine Medical Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Boston, to provide full cancer care close to home. An adjoining 4,300-square-foot Medical Infusion Center will consolidate the organization’s infusion services and provide additional outpatient medical treatments including hydration therapy, transfusions and injections.

Portland architectural firm SMRT is overseeing the design of the proposed $6.2 million renovation. Construction management services will be provided by Landry/French Construction Co. of Scarborough.

“Together as one, Mid Coast–Parkview Health is a strong and unified health care system, providing integrated care for this region of Maine,” Lois Skillings, president and CEO of Mid Coast-Parkview Health, said in a release announcing the renovation plans. “This past year, we have worked diligently toward fulfilling our goals of reducing costs and expanding services to support the healthcare needs of our community.” Skillings was a 2015 Mainebiz Women to Watch award winner.
