$6.3B budget plan includes sales, lodging tax hikes

The Legislature's budget-writing Appropriations Committee unanimously approved a $6.3 billion spending plan Friday that includes a temporary sales tax increase and retains most of the state's revenue-sharing program with municipalities.

The Bangor Daily News reported the proposed 0.5% sales tax increase and 1% meals and lodging tax increase would raise an estimated $178 million. The revenue would restore $125 million of a $200 million revenue-sharing program with municipalities that Gov. Paul LePage proposed suspending. The rest of the new tax revenue would support raises for state employees that have had pay freezes for more than four years.

The paper reported the committee planned to issue a final vote on the bill later today.
