A look back: A college president becomes rainmaker

In January 2001, Mainebiz reported that Bowdoin College hired a president who could continue the fiscal rebuilding started by Robert Edwards. Barry Mills, who graduated from Bowdoin in 1972 and had worked as a lawyer in New York, did more than keep things stable. In 14 years at the helm, before retiring in 2015, Mills is credited with helping build the endowment from $470 million to $1.4 billion, establishing a strong foundation for the future.

Fun Fact: A full-page ad in the Mainebiz of April 30, 2001, a network provider offered “a solution for harnessing the power of the internet.” The ad went on: “Dial-up service now available in Portland.”
