The January 1996 issue of Mainebiz featured a profile of the European Bakery, which is still in the business of selling baked goods on Route 1 in Falmouth. The story talked about the craze of low fat and no-fat foods. “If you’re going to eat something, it should be something good,” proprietor Helen Kazanzides told Mainebiz at the time. She went on to say the bakery went through 40 pounds of butter and 16 quarts of cream a week. She touted the bakery’s three-layer chocolate cake: “You need to bake the cake, make the raspberry, the whipped chocolate, the melted chocolate and decorate [the cake]. Do you have the time? We’ll do it for you, for $19.95.” Sounds like a bargain in any year.
Fun Fact: A display ad in the February 1996 issue of Mainebiz touted a deal for a 1994 Mercedes 500 SL Roadster convertible. It was two years old, had logged 5,700 miles, and was available for the stunning price of $69,777. This was 23 years ago.
