A Look Back: Layoffs were icing on a bitter cake

Seven years ago, going into the holiday season, Hostess, which had been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, cut 15,000 jobs including 370 at its bakery in Biddeford. The maker of Wonder Bread, Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Suzy Qs had just received permission from a bankruptcy court judge to sell the business.

Fun fact: Seven years ago, the owners of Saddleback, the Berry family, announced plans to sell the resort for $12 million, Mainebiz reported in its Dec. 24, 2012, issue. It’s been a long journey since, with prospective buyers falling through. But in recent weeks it was reported that the family may finally have a buyer, the Boston-based Arctaris Impact Fund, for an undisclosed amount, and the resort may open for the 2020-21 season.
