Several Maine institutions are pursuing new programs within the health fields. Here’s a quick summary:
Both the University of New England in Portland and Husson University in Bangor are opening doctorate of pharmacy programs this fall to prepare students for careers as pharmacists and/or pharmaceutical scientists. Each has been granted pre-candidacy status from the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education in Chicago. UNE’s program opens with 100 students, Husson’s with 65 students.
Maine Medical Center in Portland and Boston’s Tufts University School of Medicine welcomed their inaugural class earlier this month in the unique collaborative between the hospital and university. Students will spend their first two years at Tufts and last two years at Maine Med earning their medical degrees. Graduates will receive a combined diploma from TUSM and MMC. Of the 36 students accepted to the program, 20 are from Maine. Currently, 30%-40% of Maine Medical Center’s residents remain in Maine after they graduate. With this partnership, program organizers believe the retention rate can increase to 75%.
