An Acton business owner and former town official has been found guilty on 19 counts of tax evasion by a York County jury.
Richard Weymouth, 67, owner of a snowplow and excavation business, received the verdict Sept. 19 in York County Superior Court, Maine Attorney General Janet T. Mills said in a Monday announcement. Weymouth is expected to be sentenced within the next 45 days.
Weymouth is an Acton resident, operates R.W. Construction Co. there and has been elected to the town’s budget and road committees for several terms, Mills said. However, he claimed to have lived in Rochester, N.H., with his mother for tax purposes and listed his mailing address as a post office box in Milton Mills, N.H.
Between 2006 and 2012, Weymouth failed to report most of the income he earned from R.W. Construction Co. He also failed to pay state and use taxes for several trucks and other equipment he purchased by claiming that he was a New Hampshire resident and that the company equipment was located there.
Weymouth has paid the state approximately $42,000 in back taxes, interest and penalties, but still owes the town of Acton an undetermined amount in excise taxes, along with an undisclosed amount to the federal government in income taxes.
