After 57 years, the owners of Pizza by Michael, known by locals as Michael's Pizza, will be hanging up their aprons and passing the business to a new owner.
In a social media announcement on Oct.19, owners Mike and Vera Kalagias said they are retiring and look forward to traveling and spending time with family. Their last day at Michael's Pizza will be Nov. 26.
"We would like to thank the generations of loyal customers for all of their support over the years," they said. "We would also like to thank our suppliers, notably Micucci Wholesale Foods and Botto Bakery, for their years of wonderful service!"
Pizza by Michael, at 12 Common St. in Saco, is a family-owned business that opened in 1966, and the Kalagias' bought the company in 1978. The shop has been in the family for 57 years, with Mike at the helm for the last 45.
The restaurant offers a variety of pizzas, as well as sandwiches like meatball subs and Italians.
"The building was already a pizza shop," said Vera Kalagias. "We developed pizza sauce and dough. Dining is about the same as it was when we first opened; patrons say it brings them back to their childhood."
Pizza by Michael will continue operation with a new owner, Corey Johnson.
"We hope that everyone will embrace the new owner, Corey Johnson, as he works with his team to open Pizza by Michael in the near future. We wish him all the best," said the social media post.
Vera Kalagias told Mainebiz that Johnson bought the recipes for the pizza dough, sauce and meatballs. He has years of experience in the restaurant industry and plans to keep the same name.
Johnson also plans to do light renovations to the restaurant. No specific reopening date has been announced.
Gonna tough shoes to fill..
