An Alaska-based airline is planning to bid to provide service at airports in Presque Isle and Trenton, replacing current carrier Colgan Air, which plans to end service next year.
Officials from Peninsula Airways Inc. are expected to meet with U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe today to discuss their intention to bid to serve the Northern Maine Regional Airport and the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, the Bangor Daily News reported. Colgan Air earlier this year petitioned the U.S. Department of Transportation to end its service between Boston and Presque Isle and Bar Harbor and Plattsburg, N.Y., as part of a strategic move to reduce service at its Boston hub. Per regulations under the DOT's Essential Air Service program, Colgan must service the airports until a new carrier is identified. Colgan Air, based in Memphis, receives an annual subsidy of $2.1 million to run its Bar Harbor service and $2.6 million for its Presque Isle service.
Snowe told the paper Peninsula Air is hoping to service the airports with a 34-seat aircraft, which is the same size as Colgan Air's current aircraft.
