A $1.5 million, three-year grant awarded to the University of Maine’s athletic program by the Harold Alfond Foundation is being called a “game-changer” by UMaine President Susan Hunter, according to WCSH6-TV
"It's an extremely generous gift," UMaine Athletic Director Karlton Creech told WCSH, adding that donation is “one that we are humbled by and grateful for and something that we'll use to make all of our sports programs better."
Half of the money will be used to create the Alfond Fund, a three-year unrestricted grant of $750,000, which will be used to encourage donor support, in addition to increasing the visibility of the UMaine athletic program.
The other half will be used to continue the Harold Alfond Football Challenge, a program that has offered dollar-for-dollar matching grants of up to $250,000 a year in support of UMaine football since 2007, according to the Bangor Daily News.
“This is going to change the landscape of how we do our annual giving for UMaine athletics,” Seth Woodcock, the University of Maine’s senior associate athletic director for development, told the BDN. “This will bring us up to par with other Division I institutions. This will give us a lot more flexibility to help our teams become more competitive and provide the best experience possible for our student-athletes.
