Allagash founder and employees safe after Brussels attacks

Rob Tod, the founder of Portland-based Allagash Brewing Co., and five other employees who were on their way home from a weeklong trip visiting breweries in Belgium arrived at the Zaventem airport in Brussels just five minutes after two terrorist bombs detonated at a pair of check-in stations, taking the lives of 11 people on Tuesday.

The two explosions that ripped through the airport were part of a larger attack in Brussels on Tuesday morning, which included another explosion at the Maelbeek metro station, where 20 people died. In all, 260 were injured in the attacks.

“Crazy end to trip. Events at the airport occurred five minutes before we arrived,” tweeted Allagash brewmaster, Jason Perkins. “All Allagash Brewing crew are safe, headed out of Brussels.”

Jeff Pillet-Shore, a spokesman for Allagash Brewing, told the Portland Press Herald on Tuesday that Tod and the other brewery employees had hired a car to transport them to Paris to catch a flight back to the United States, but were unsure when or exactly where they would arrive.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Brussels and Belgium,” Allagash said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. “Thankfully, everyone on the trip is OK and unharmed, and making arrangements to leave Europe. This is a very sad day for a city and country that means so much to us.”
