Anthem seeks hike, again

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is seeking to raise rates by 23% for a portion of its individual policyholders, the sixth time in as many years the company has sought double-digit increases.

Maine's largest health insurer is requesting the rate hike from the state Bureau of Insurance for about 11,000 of its 21,000 individual policy holders, according to the Portland Press Herald, because current rates do not cover costs. Anthem spokesman Christopher Dugan told the paper that Anthem lost $2.4 million on its individual policies in Maine last year, despite a 10.9% rate increase approved by the state.

If approved, the new rates would take effect in July. Anthem has about 400,000 customers in Maine.
