A group opposing a new beverage tax far outraised its opponents during the most recent quarter.
Finance reports filed this week with the Maine Ethics Commission show the group, Fed Up With Taxes, raised nearly $375,000 from May 28 to July 15, according to the Kennebec Journal, while the opposing group, Health Coverage for Maine, raised slightly more than $25,000. To date, Fed Up With Taxes has more than $76,000 in cash remaining to spend, while Health Coverage for Maine has $49,000.
Fed Up With Taxes last week submitted more than 90,000 signatures to the state to force a referendum on a tax on beer, wine and soda passed late in the last legislative session. The tax will be used to pay for the state-subsidized health insurance program Dirigo Health. The group needs 55,087 of those signatures to be validated by the secretary of state for the referendum to appear on the November ballot.
