A Portland-based developer is proposing turning part of Bates Mill No. 2 in Lewiston into more than 50 apartment units.
City councilors yesterday heard more details on the $9.6 million project, which would redevelop part of the mill building into 55 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, 34 of which would be for low-income residents, according to the Sun Journal. Nathan Szanton, principal of Szanton Co., said rents would start at $640 for fair-market tenants and $483 for tenants making 50% of the average median income. The Lofts at Bates Mill, first proposed at the end of May, would be the company's sixth housing project, according to the paper.
Some councilors, however, expressed concern that the project would steal good tenants from other downtown city housing, citing already high vacancy rates and landlords' struggle to find good tenants. But Szanton and other councilors argued the project would bring additional tenants into the downtown area.
Councilors will vote on the project and a 15-year tax increment finance incentive on Aug. 10.
