Apple season to start early

An easy winter and warm spring have pushed Maine's apple season two weeks ahead of schedule, the state's apple growers say.

Warm weather early in the season, coupled with a late frost in the spring, has resulted in smaller but earlier harvests for many apple growers, Renae Moran, a fruit tree specialist with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, told the Bangor Daily News. Some orchards have already begun harvesting apples ahead of the usual fall start date, and some have opened to the public or are planning to open next week, at least a week ahead of the usual schedule.

Jennifer DeChant of the Maine State Pomological Society told the paper apple growers are hoping the early season will attract tourists before Labor Day weekend.
