Aquaculture eyed by South Portland

City councilors from South Portland held a workshop earlier this week to discuss the possibility of converting and expanding the Portland Street Pier in Ferry Village into what would be the first aquaculture operation for the city.

The pier eyed for the possible aquaculture operation is off Front Street, situated between Sunset Marina and a Portland Pipe Line Corp. pier. The Forecaster reports that city councilors were presented with a report by Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Director Kevin Adams that says significant repairs and dredging are needed before building the pier’s expansion to accommodate the facility.

Aquaculture is one of three industries that are part of the FocusMaine effort to attract jobs to Maine. The other industries are agriculture and biopharmaceuticals.

The Forecaster reports that aquaculture contributes approximately 2% of the demand for seafood in the United States. In Maine, aquaculture has grown up to 10% in gross revenue and employment per year.

The workshop adjourned with councilors requesting more research about the project at a future workshop in a few months. The Forecaster reports that city officials were pushing for a resolution sooner rather than later.

“I’d like to see piers going in next spring, and that means [beginning] a permitting process pretty soon,” Councilor Claude Morgan said at the workshop.
