A new aquaculture company is planning to set up operations on former Navy land in Gouldsboro.
Maine Halibut Farms, which has been under development at the University of Maine Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research in Franklin, wants to build a new facility on a 12-acre lot in the town's village of Corea, according to the Bangor Daily News. Gouldsboro's planning board earlier this month approved dividing about 26 acres of the 40-acre former Navy base into four lots, all of which would be used for aquaculture or commercial fishery businesses. The land is owned by Eastern Maine Development Corp.
Alan Spear, owner of Maine Halibut Farms, said the company has spent several years developing its aquaculture methods at CCAR, and that there is a strong market for farmed halibut. The company hopes to submit formal plans in the next several months and could be operational within two years. Spear told the paper it was too early to specify how large an operation the company would have in Gouldsboro.
