Aroostook Band of Micmacs gets federal grant to build Presque Isle facility
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded $500,000 to the Aroostook Band of Micmacs to fund the construction of a two-story, multi-function facility in Presque Isle.
In an announcement issued on Friday, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, said the facility will be used for important tribal programs such as Head Start and programs for young people and senior citizens.
“Investing in infrastructure for the Aroostook Band of Micmacs ensures that the tribe can provide programs crucial to the community,” they said in a joint statement. “We applaud the USDA for supporting Maine tribes like the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and helping to strengthen our rural communities.”
Besides housing and facilities for programs, the construction project will include road, water, sewer and electrical upgrades and a new paved parking area.
Funding will be provided through the USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities Direct Loan Program for the development of essential community facilities in rural areas.
The program is open to federally recognized tribes, as well as public bodies and community-based non-profit corporations.
